In 1988 a group of nurses, doctors and other supporters met to do something about the high levels of stress and burnout among health care staff. They set up a charity, called the Didsbury Trust, to provide educational programmes and a quiet space to nurture the participants.

Stephen and Jeannie
Jean Sayre-Adams, from San Francisco, who was teaching the healing arts in many workshops in the UK became one of the founders and its first director.

Our current chairman Stephen Wright, one of the UK's most distinguished nurses, was also among the first team of trustees. In the years that followed, thousands of health care staff were helped and had their horizons expanded through our courses on healing and wellbeing.

A fund raising campaign in 1996 led to the purchase of our own retreat space in rural Cumbria in the Lake District National Park. A change of name to the Sacred Space Foundation followed. We have a second residence about 5 miles away.

Our two on-site directors co-ordinate a wide range of support for residents and day visitors - over 600 people a year now seek our help. We initially focused on health care professionals, but the emotional and spiritual challenges they face affect people from many other backgrounds just the same, thus we now help people from all walks of life.
